Yes, online courses do require textbooks that are in most cases available for order online through the specific institution that you are taking the classes.  It is important to understand that just because you are taking an online class, don't assume that all other aspects about the class will be different.  Traditional college courses require textbooks and so do online college courses.  Most importantly, you will be required to read your assignment as if you were in a traditional classroom.  The best thing is that you will have more freedom as to when and where you will read this assignment.

Another advantage to taking online courses is that the classes are mostly small interactive classes.  In any learning environment a low class ratio is advantageous for the students.  Online institutions often maintain small classes.

Most online programs require that their faculty consist of dedicated instructors with advanced degrees in their subject matter.  You might be wondering who is teaching these online courses since many times you won't get an opportunity to meet them.  I actually went through the intensive interviewing process for one popular online educational institution and the requirements and expectations were quite rigorous, to say the least.

Some programs offer a combination of campus-based learning and online learning.  You could in fact attend class once or twice a week - days, evenings, and/or weekends then complete other requirements via electronic forums.
